Crispy deep fried calamari

I always love to provide a step by step procedure for the recipe that I develop or write about. This one may upset you and I sincerely apologize. Honestly, this was so good that I could not resist sharing with you. I will definitely look forward to doing this again with detailed images and a video soon. This is a very quick appetizer and you can always make this at home easily. Nowadays, you can get the ready-to-use calamari in the frozen sections of most of the big grocery stores. I find their texture a bit more chewy as compared to the fresh ones.

This is widely served with a mayo-based or cream-based dip. I made my own soy-lime dip (Pinoy style). I find the cream-based dip a bit heavy with deep-fried foods and I feel healthier 😉 thinking that I am not loading calories on myself with the soy-lime dip.

Ingredients

  • 500 gms calamari
  • 100 gms all purpose flour
  • 50 gms corn flour
  • 2 tbsp garlic powder
  • 2 tbsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp ground black pepper
  • 2 tbsp finely chopped coriander
  • Salt
  • Oil for deep fry

Kitchen Tools

  • Chef’s knife
  • Cutting board
  • Bowl(small, medium)
  • Deep fryer/Deep frying pan
  • Mesh Skimmer Strainer

Instructions:

Clean the calamari by pulling off the head gently from the body.

Cut the tentacles from the head and discard the head.

For the body, peel off the skin. Split the tube and scrape off the internal parts.

Cut into a triangular shape. Wash and drain it.

In a bowl put the all purpose flour, corn flour, garlic powder, onion powder, chopped coriander, salt, and pepper.

Mix them well.

Now put your clean calamari into the flour mixture bowl. Toast them and leave them for few minutes.

If you are using a deep fryer, keep the heat above 350 degrees F.

If you are using a deep frying pan, put the oil on a high-medium heat.

It is very important to have the right temperature. If you do not have a thermometer, here is a tip. Drop a small piece of coated calamari in the hot oil.

If you see it floating instantly, your oil is ready.

Fry them for 3 to 4 mins or till they turn golden brown and crispy.

Serve

This can be served with lime wage and dip.
